A smooth, distinctive blend of Voice from the Eastern Townships in Quebec, Canada with Classical Guitar from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.
Formed in 2008 and uniting singer, Sonia Patenaude (Quebec, Canada) and guitarist Ben Kinsley (Vermont, USA), the duet Northern Comfort was a creative outlet performing in local restaurants and bars on both sides of the Canadian border. Ben and Sonia have an extremely diverse repertoire from early bossa nova and songs from the great American songbook, to pop and hip hop.
Northern Comfort is Sonia Patenaude, Voice, from Quebec, Canada; and Ben Kinsley, Nylon String Guitar, from Vermont USA.
Recorded live on Sherbrooke, Quebec’s CFLX 95.5 radio program “Arts d’Oeuvre,” hosted by Sylvie Bergeron
Every once in a while a song enters your orbit that is so beautiful in melody and message that you feel it must be shared with everyone – “Into My Arms” by Nick Cave was one of those songs for Sonia and I. It was one of the first songs we practiced and performed together as Northern Comfort and it's still melts our hearts each time we play it. This version is inspired from an arrangement by Sarah Jane Morris https://www.sarahjanemorris.co.uk/ and Marc Ribot. https://www.marcribot.com/
This version of "Foi a Noite" by Tom Jobim and Newton Mendoca is adapted from an arrangement by Marco Pereira. Marco is a brilliant guitarist, composer, and arranger from São Paulo, Brazil and was kind enough to write out the score for us to record and perform. https://www.marcopereira.com.br

Sonia Patenaude
Having sung since a very young age, Sonia Patenaude learned the rudiments of song as a member of the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir (1991-2018), the first Juno-nominated and winning gospel choir in Canada. A trained singer, actor, and dancer, she has sung within various choral ensembles including Choromondo under direction of Allyna Harris and the Bishop’s University Singers at Bishop’s University with directors Jamie Crooks and Fannie Gaudette.
After a long journey away from performing theatre, Sonia was cast as Audrey II in Bordeline Theatre’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors” presented at the Haskell Opera House in August 2018.
She has been fortunate to work with Eastern Townships musicians such as the house band from Arts d’Oeuvres, bassist Jonathan Guillaume Boudreau, and pianists Julian Gutierrez and Eric Akbar Manolson.
A regular Arts and Culture columnist on The Friday Drive on community radio in the Eastern Townships for CJMQ and CIDI, Sonia has been invited to host various events for Festival Traditions du monde de Sherbrooke.
In addition to Northern Comfort, Sonia has performed with Ben in the quintet “Crossing Borders”.
